ABOUT OUR PROGRAM

The Chatfield Senior High School band program offers students a comprehensive music education through various ensembles. We believe music is essential to human experience, making music education crucial for a student's growth. Our goal is to create a rehearsal and performance setting that promotes skill development, musical understanding, personal and group excellence, and appreciation for diverse music and arts. The band program is backed by supportive school administration and an active band booster organization. Band parents and guardians can participate in the band boosters by volunteering and are our most passionate supporters!

Marching Chargers

The Chatfield Marching Band is our largest ensemble, and represents CSH at home football games, competitions around the state, and various other school and community events. The Marching Chargers are a volunteer ensemble that begins its season with a camp prior to the beginning of the school year and is active throughout the fall season.  Band students consistently cite their participation in the CSH Marching Chargers as one of the most-rewarding aspects of their high school experience, and value the sense of community, pride, work-ethic, and excellence the marching band fosters.

Wind Ensemble

During the fall, the Wind Ensemble is the class for all brass and woodwind students who participate in Marching Band, allowing all students to receive the specialized musical and visual instruction demanded of that activity.

Following the Marching Band season, students are placed into one of two ensembles for the remainder of the year, with the Wind Ensemble providing the home for our most advanced wind and percussion students.

The Wind Ensemble has received numerous “Superior” ratings at concert band festivals, and in 2024 qualified for the State Concert Band Festival for the first time since 2007. The wind ensemble qualified for the State Concert Band Festival again in 2025.

Symphonic Band

During the fall, the Symphonic Band is the class for all percussion students who participate in Marching Band, allowing all students to receive the specialized musical and visual instruction demanded of that activity.

Following the Marching Band season, students are placed into one of two ensembles for the remainder of the year, with the Symphonic Band providing the home for our intermediate wind and percussion students. The Symphonic Band attends the CHSAA Concert Band Festival and has received “Superior” and “Excellent” ratings in performance and sight-reading.

Concert Band

The Concert Band class is the fall-semester class for all wind and percussion students who not participating in the CSH Marching Band.  The Concert Band focuses on individual musical development through large ensemble and chamber group performance, as well as performing at the fall concert with the Orchestras and Jazz Bands.

In the spring, the Concert Band students join the marching band students to create the Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band classes.

CSH is fortunate to offer two jazz bands.  Jazz Band 2 offers new and developing jazz students, including non-traditional jazz instruments, the opportunity to develop the language and knowledge of jazz styles.

Jazz Band 1 is an advanced ensemble that performs a wide variety of jazz styles at high level, and frequently performs in the school and wider community.  Both jazz ensembles are rooted in large ensemble performance and the development of improvisational skills through a commitment to combo performance and study.

Color Guard

The CSH Color Guard is open to all students at Chatfield and performs with the Marching Band throughout fall, and independently throughout the spring semester.

The Color Guard develops dance and equipment fundamentals, and allows students to experience the joys of participation in the pageantry arts in a unique and creative outlet.
