ABOUT OUR PROGRAM

The Chatfield Senior High band offers a comprehensive, high-quality music education through diverse ensembles. We view music as essential to whole-student development and foster rehearsals and performances that build skill, musical and emotional understanding, ensemble excellence, and aesthetic appreciation. The program is supported by school administration and an active band booster organization; parents/guardians can volunteer and are our most important supporters.

Marching Band

The Chatfield Marching Band, our largest ensemble, represents CSH at home football games, state competitions, and community events. A volunteer group, it begins with a pre‑school band camp and is active throughout the fall season. Students consistently cite marching band as a highlight of their high school experience, praising its community, pride, work ethic, and commitment to excellence. In 2025, the Chatfield Marching Chargers were a CBAFinalist, earning 6th place in class 5A.

Wind Ensemble

In fall, the Wind Ensemble serves all brass and woodwind students in Marching Band, providing the specialized musical and visual instruction that activity requires. After marching season, all band students (including concert band students) are placed into two ensembles for the remainder of the year; the Wind Ensemble is our most advanced wind and percussion ensemble. The Wind Ensemble has earned multiple “Superior” ratings at concert festivals and qualified for the State Concert Band Festival in 2024, 2025, and 2026.

Symphonic Band

In the fall, all Marching Band percussionists take Symphonic Band for specialized musical and visual training. After marching season, all band students (including concert band students) are placed into two ensembles for the remainder of the year; Symphonic Band is our intermediate wind and percussion ensemble. The Symphonic Band performs at CHSAA festival and other area events.

Concert Band

The Concert Band class is the fall-semester class for all wind and percussion students not participating in the CSH Marching Band.  The Concert Band focuses on individual musical development through large ensemble and chamber group performance, as well as a comprehensive music literacy and theory curriculum. In the spring, the Concert Band students join the Wind Ensemble or Symphonic Band.

Jazz Band Combos

We offer one full Jazz Band plus combo and small-group opportunities. Jazz band provides an inclusive environment for developing improvisation and ensemble skills through both large-ensemble repertoire and dedicated combo study. Students work on jazz language, styles, and performance technique; emerging players and those on non-traditional jazz instruments gain experience in section and solo roles, while advanced students perform demanding literature and represent the band in school and community events. Both the large ensemble and the smaller combos emphasize improvisation, listening, and ensemble communication as core parts of the curriculum.

Color Guard

The CSH Color Guard is open to all students at Chatfield and performs with the Marching Band throughout fall, and independently throughout the spring semester. The Color Guard develops dance and equipment fundamentals, and allows students to experience the joys of participation in the pageantry arts in a unique and creative outlet.
